Geographic Area: BAHAWALPUR
Phase: 1st (First)
Status: Completed |

| National Rural Support Program NRSP released grant to open adult literacy centers in Bahawalpur. This project was started in August 2006. Village Nawan Basti was selected to open centers at first. This was the most poverty stricken areas of Bahawalpur where NRSP was already involved in certain projects such as Micro Credit Schemes. |
| |
| AFT was given target to establish and operate 50 adult literacy
centers and provide literacy to 1500 learners. Initially, 53 centers were opened and 1543 learners were identified, enrolled. At conclusion, from 51 centers 1089 learners were benefited. A total number of 58 teachers (34 female and 24 male teachers) were trained during the project. The substantial reason behind the decrease in participation rate of learners was lack of interest of teachers and cotton crop
harvesting season as most of the learners are farmers. 2 centers were also closed due to same reasons. The project’s 1st phase was
completed in March 2007. |

Implementing Partner: Azaan Foundation Trust (AFT)
Donor Agency: NRSP
Geographic Area: YAZMAN, District BAHAWALPUR
Phase: 2nd (Second)
Status: Completed |
| |
| To overcome the root causes experienced in the previous phase which led to unimpressive participation of learners, AFT changed its approach this time in a way that teachers were motivated for their extreme interest in the teachers training sessions. The geographical area focused in this 2nd phase was tehsil Yazman of district
Bahawalpur. |
| |
| The 2nd phase of the project started in April 2007. Initially, 72
teachers were identified and trained out of which 54 teachers (49 female and 5 male teachers) were selected and awarded to run literacy centers. A total number of 1648 learners were identified and enrolled from which 1282 learners successfully achieved literacy skills. Now they are able to read newspaper, write a letter & can do everyday Mathematics. This project was concluded in September 2007. |
