PAKISTAN EARTHQUAKE 2005
 
There is a history of various disasters that took place in Pakistan. The most devastating natural disaster in the history of Pakistan was occurred at 8:50 a.m. on October 8, 2005, when a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck northern Pakistan causing serious damage in the North West Frontier province (NWFP) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
Over 4000 villages were affected, 73,000 people killed, 79,000 injured and 3.3 million people rendered homeless. Over 470,000 houses were completely destroyed, nearly 65% of the hospitals in the area were destroyed or badly damaged and an estimated 10,000 school buildings were affected. In addition to the estimated $5 billion in property damage, there was significant loss of livelihoods through destruction of arable land, crops and livestock, businesses, and jobs. Hence most of the civil society structures like schools, colleges and hospitals were destroyed.
 
Azaan Relief Activities for Earthquake Survivors
October 8, 2005 is an unforgettable tragedy not only in the history of Pakistan but also in the history of the world. Millions of people were left shelterless and without food. Thousand of schools were vanished. The local, regional and international aid communities mobilized immediately and supplies began to pour into the region. The team of Azaan Foundation on self-support basis extended their generous help to the victims of the earthquake by providing supplies that included clothing, blankets, tents, food and medicines. After immediate relief activities the team of Azaan Foundation practically visited destroyed schools in various districts of the affected areas and assessed for the necessary and swift educational assistance that could be the need of the hour.
 
Azaan Assistance to the Earthquake Affectees of District Bagh
District Bagh in Azad Kashmir was one of the worst hit areas by the devastating tremor. Approximately 8,000 people lost their lives and an estimated 83,000 lost their homes from the total population of 400,000 in October 8, 2005 quake. In this area AFT particularly focused on educational assistance for private schools under the title of “Azaan Schools Assistance Program” keeping in view that the prime focus of the national and international agencies was Govt schools. There were 20 private schools and AFT team visited 19 out of 20. The infrastructure of the majority of schools was badly damaged. AFT maintained the data of five schools which was completely destroyed. Azaan Foundation also provided school and hostel furniture, stationery to 8 schools with the help of SPS College Swat, while children of 9 schools were given warm jackets.
 
Azaan Assistance to the Earthquake Affectees of District Shangla
Shangla was one of the affected and neglected areas of the N.W.F.P. Devastating earthquake badly affected almost whole population of the district in one or other shape. This natural disaster took about thousands human lives, seriously injured many more persons. The climate in the region is cold with patches of moderate weather in summers. The worst affected areas in Shangla district were union councils Shahpur, Damori, Pirkhana, Koozkana, Maira, Shang, Dandai, Kormang, and Sarkool.
Azaan Foundation had provided tents, warm clothes, blankets, food stuff to the earthquake effected people in above union councils under the title of “AZAAN”.
