| Monitoring |
 |
| AFT has a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system developed to ensure that the literacy projects delivered to maximum effectiveness. AFT monitors are required to make frequent
monitoring visits to each center at least a few times over the course of the project. The
frequency of monitoring visits depends on the quality of the center, as centers of lower
performance are visited more often than well-functioning ones. The quality of center is assessed holistically taking in the teacher’s quality of instruction, the learners engagement, attendance and test performance. This distributes monitoring visits according to need. Following each visit, monitors fill out a standardized monitoring form and file it in the center’s record. |
| |
The purpose of monitoring visits is to check the progress of teachers and learners. AFT monitors are instructed to view monitoring visits as classroom facilitations and to maintain a friendly
rapport with teachers and learners. These monitoring visits are very effective since they are a form of quality control for the program. Quality assurance at the grass root level is imperative not only for designing a standardized instructional system but also for long term sustainability and development. |
| |
| The following activities are monitored with the help of specific checklist and formats developed particularly for this purpose. |
| |
1. A baseline assessment of every learner
2. An evaluation test at the completion of every book
3. Assessment of the centre’s environment
4. Evaluation of the teacher’s training method
5. Grading of both teacher and learner performance
6. Assessment of the progress of the literacy project |
