| Azaan Foundation Trust (AFT) follows self defined guidelines to establish centers. The implementation time period for centers is 6 months, which includes 3 months for the literacy courses. AFT staff identifies, hire and train men and women in each community as teachers. In addition, they and the literacy center teachers enlist students or learners for the programme and establish centers to hold classes in. Literacy centers are usually established in the teacher’s houses and in some cases in learners homes. Illiterate learners, whose literacy skills in reading or writing or both are severely underdeveloped or not existent, are sought for the enrolment in the centers by AFT staff and teachers. AFT staff consists of a project director, project managers, master trainers, monitors and literacy center teachers. |

| AFT’s main teaching instrument is a set of 4 books called Azaan literacy syllabus. These syllabus books were developed by the research team of Pakistan
Educational Research and Development (PERD), which use the phonetic style of speech to teach Urdu. Three of the books are in Urdu language while the fourth one is a maths book. The books include writing exercises, reading passages and comprehension questions, sentence formation exercises, colouring activities and pictures. The maths book contains simple calculations for addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division and also contains lessons on how to tell time. The books also contain messages on mental well-being, health and
nutrition and environmental issues, such as deforestation and soil erosion. Some new features include formation and empowerment of community organizations and success stories from the learners. |
| |
| The books are distributed free of charge to each learner and are completed in a period of 90 days or 180 hours. Learners attend classes two hours daily, six days a week and are assessed three times during the program. Monitoring and center visits are also carried out regularly by AFT staff. AFT’s system of implementation is comprehensive as it includes monitoring, evaluation and assessment of learners throughout the implementation process. |
