MALAKAND OPERATION 2009

Due to the military operation against Taliban militants in Swat, Dir lower and Buner districts in northern Pakistan, mass exodus has started as thousands of men, women and children are on the move. Bedraggled men, women in burkas and children piled on to pick-up trucks, and led animals through streets in their haste to flee Swat valley, devastated by a nearly two-year Taliban insurgency. Real people uprooted from homes, routines, community, and forced to migrate to safety that are approaching to Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda and Peshawar. Around 80 percent of those who have been displaced by the fighting in Swat only are children. They lack food, clean water and sanitation facilities, and many are suffering from psychological trauma. “Massive displacement,” is the phrase emblazoned across newspapers as an estimated 3.8 Million people are expected to move from the volatile areas to save their lives.

On the other hand Azaan has also collected a data of school children who are affected and sacrificed their education for the stability of Pakistan. From its own funds Azaan has distributed 2000 school bags with a pack of story books & activities and necessary stationery among the selected needy children. This is because when they return to their homes safely they should not lose the interest of getting education and going regularly to their schools.

Distribution of Flash Lights among IDPs Families

Keeping in view of the necessities of everyday life, Azaan Foundation has distributed 500 flash lights among the IDPs families (one light for each family) living in camps and schools in Charsadda on July 18, 2009. There are several reasons for the selection of this item. These water resistant flash lights are maintenance free and doesn’t need any batteries or chargers; even the light bulb doesn’t fuse. It’s rechargeable magnetic capacitor charge by moving the flash light to and fro for several minutes. Though it is small but could be one of the best gifts that Azaan Foundation has selected for IDPs due to their inadequate economic conditions.
