History

In 1997, a fine team of enthusiastic, devoted and hard working young men thought of developing basic literacy in the country. They carried out research in basic literacy in non formal education from 1997 to 2000. After 2001 when the program was ready to be launched they put it into action from various plinths such as NGOs, juvenile jails, industries and more specially NCHD, UNESCO, UNICEF and NRSP in sixty districts.

In 2002, the same team worked with National Commission for Human Development NCHD to establish literacy centers in 60 districts of Pakistan. This exclusive adult literacy project was designed and implemented by this team and after providing the training to NCHD staff, this project was handed over to NCHD. As work with NCHD ended there was a desperate need to create a platform for executing such activities independently and thus Pakistan Educational Research and Development PERD was created in 2004.

In September 2004, the National Rural Support Program NRSP and Pakistan Educational Research and Development PERD contracted a partnership for a pilot project to establish 50 Adult Literacy Centers each in the Mardan and Attock districts with the goal of providing functional literacy to 3000 individuals. The struggle behind the instigation of this remarkable project was named as Azaan Literacy Movement (ALM).

The aim of the pilot phase was to generate impressive results that would be used in the process of expansion. Several reviews carried out have indicated that the functional adult literacy approach has taken root and has yielded inspiring results. For instance, adult learners from functional adult literacy classes used their literacy and numeracy skills to improve on income-generating activities. Azaan Literacy Movement (ALM) was initially created with the objective of helping people to achieve a level of functional literacy and now this movement has turned into an incredible program “Azaan Literacy Program (ALP)” which has now become one of the major tools for poverty eradication.

After a successful launch and continuance of ALP it was visualized to get recognition of this name and finally Azaan Foundation Trust (AFT) was established. Azaan Foundation Trust is now a partner organization of Pakistan Educational Research & Development (PERD) and has been registered under trust act 1882 of Pakistan.

Azaan Foundation Trust AFT, in parallel to Azaan Literacy Program, is also working on ICT literacy through its Information and Communication Technology Resource Centers ICTRCs Program. AFT is seeking partnerships with related stakeholders in promoting ICT literacy and education improvement by using computer as a tool. AFT has expertise in establishing self-sustainable computer labs in educational institutions with ICT curriculum, teachers training and monitoring and evaluation procedures. AFT intends to provide platform to all NGO’s, foundations, international donors, government agencies, and multinational companies to achieve their respective objectives while creating synergies for sustainable educational projects specializing in the area of ICT.
